WHO WOULD ENJOY THIS COURSE

Although this course is designed originally for people who already have at least a basic experience in West African music and dance, we are open to accepting applications from anyone interested in West African music, dance, indigenous knowledge, education, and art forms. We strive to make the course accessible to anyone.

Applications from anyone within the following categories will be welcome.  

  • Professionals and students in the fields of percussion, ethnomusicology, and performance

  • Enthusiasts of world music drumming, dancing, or African culture

  • Educators interested in West African dance forms and movement.

  • West African choral/vocal music teachers and enthusiasts.

  • Educators of the performing and visual arts including, but not limited to music, dance, drama, K-12, and collegiate levels.

  • General educators with a background or interest in the arts and/or African cultures integrations into other fields.

  • Multicultural music educators and advocates.

  • Music Therapists and Orff-Schulwerk teachers

  • Anyone interested in West African indigenous knowledge, histories and religion and language.

ELIGIBILITY

Enrollment is open to all worldwide. You do not need to be enrolled at any college or university to participate in this study program.

COURSE & HOUSING COST (All prices in US Dollars)

Tuition/Course Fee:                      $1,200 per person

Room & Board (21 nights):
Double Occupancy (2 to a room):  $1,365 per person^
Single Occupancy (1 to a room):   $1,890 per person

^NOTE: A double occupancy room includes 1 Standard Bed with mattress plus either 1 standard mattress on floor or 1 Sofa Bed on floor

What is INCLUDED in total cost?

  • 74 hrs of instructional workshops, lectures and lecture-demonstrations

  • Hotel lodging at Accra, Dzodze, and Ho

  • Daily breakfast & dinner in Accra, Dzodze, and Ho

  • Airport Pick-up and Drop-off

  • All group in-country transport from June 21 – July 11, 2024 (includes return group transportation between Accra, Cape Coast, Dzodze, and Ho from June 21 to July 11)

  • Group organized cultural events

  • Onsite teaching-learning resources

  • Group classes in traditional drumming, dancing, & singing

  • Group lectures onsite

  • Performances of traditional music and dance

  • Field Trips to nearby traditional villages, ceremonies, and sights of interest

  • Group tours of southern Volta Region

     

    What is NOT Included in total cost

  • Economic Air fare (to and from ACC, Ghana): Estimated $1,500 - $2,200, but depends on departure origin, choice of airline and time of purchase. (before you buy your ticket, please see the skeletal Schedule Outline+ below)

  • Daily lunch. Estimated price range $5 - $15 per plate (depending on location and dish).

  • Other Meals off site: Estimated $30 - $200

  • Bottled Water: Participants are expected to buy their own bottled water

  • Excursions and other local transportation in Ghana, other than organized in-country group travels

  • Visit/Tourist Visa fee: Cost depends on country of residence and application

  • Vaccination/Malaria prophylaxis/Medical consultation fees and other Travel Health requirements including those related to COVID-19: Cost depends on insurance and country of residence.

  • International travel health insurance. Cost depends on insurance company

  • Mobile phone credit and Internet usage: Optional. Estimated $30 - $100

  • Additional private instruction: Optional $15/hour
